Painting “I.V. Stalin in Marshal’s uniform in his study in the Kremlin.”
USSR, Moscow. 1945.
Original
Canvas, oil
218×145 cm.

In 1945 D. A. Nalbandyan began working on a portrait of I. V. Stalin – the Supreme Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union. The painting was preceded by a lot of preparatory work: a number of sketches were painted in Stalin’s study in the Kremlin in order to give the painting a life-like authenticity. The painting was exhibited at the All-Union Art Exhibition at the Tretyakov gallery in 1946. This portrait was awarded the Stalin Prize of the first degree. The work of D.A. Nalbandyan is a canonical portrait of Stalin, a pictorial ode to the Generalissimo.
The painting was purchased from the author in November 1946.
